Celebrate Military Appreciation Month This May
May 10, 2022
Each year, the President of the United States kicks off Military Appreciation Month with a proclamation of gratitude for our armed forces. At least, he’s done so since 1999 when Congress officially designated the month of May as Military Appreciation Month. This May, soak up the celebration and appreciation as you commemorate specific military holidays all month long.
VE Day (May 8th), Armed Forces Day (May 21st), and Military Spouse Appreciation Day (May 6th) are a few of the one-off events that call for a little extra celebration this month! If you’re looking for a few ways to enjoy Military Appreciation Month, here are some ideas.
-
Take advantage of local specials. While many businesses large and small offer discounts to military members and their families year-round, some will throw in extra perks in honor of Military Appreciation Month! See if your favorite local pizza joint or bowling alley is offering anything extra in May.
-
Thank military veterans. Make sure to express gratitude for those who served before you by participating in Military Appreciation Month events or maybe getting involved in a nonprofit that provides the services they need in order to thrive as civilians. If you personally know veterans who could use support, consider making them a meal this month or planning a special outing.

Celebrate your base’s Military Appreciation Day. While Military Appreciation Day isn’t nationally recognized like Military Appreciation Month, many bases will designate their own day to host a celebration or special event. See if your base has anything on the calendar for this month.
